Patented Sleep Sensing Technology

Tactex products use a patented technology called Kinotex®. This foam and fibre optic pressure sensing material was originally developed for the Canadian Space Agency as a way to provide durable, refined sensing abilities to robots in extreme environments. Kinotex® technology brings a number of unique advantages over competing sensors. Its non-conductive components and flexible, passive design make Kinotex® an ideal solution for healthcare monitoring.

What is Kinotex®?

A Kinotex® sensor is built by placing a network of optical fibres between layers of cellular foam. An LED light source is used to shine light along “transmit” fibres and into the foam surface.

When pressure is applied to the sensing surface, the light density within the foam changes. The amount of light and the location of the change in light density is registered by “receive” fibres. These signals are then sent back to a photo-diode for processing.

Data samples are pulled at a regular rate according to the needs of the application. The end result is an infinite number of pressure signals that can be processed and interpreted as movement metrics.

How can a Kinotex® sensor monitor sleep?

The Tactex SLEEPsensing system uses a Kinotex® sensor in the form of a 9.5” x 35” foam pad. The sensor is enclosed in a durable, waterproof cover ensuring a product lifetime of up to two years. This pad is placed underneath a bed mattress. When the bed is occupied, the sensor monitors the small and gross motor movements of the bed-occupant. The SLEEPsensing software system then uses the science of Actigraphy combined with a proprietary algorithm to translate this movement data into a quality of sleep profile.

Does it really work?

Product trials have validated that the highly sensitive properties of Kinotex® make Tactex under-mattress sensor pads a viable solution for monitoring night-time movements. Research has indicated that a 35”x 9.5” Kinotex® sensor pad is sophisticated enough to capture a bed occupant’s respiration – even from beneath a mattress.
